I'd heard stories for years about Mr. Lee's struggle in class. It seems that one day near the end, he finally snapped. During a music period, my oldest son witnessed a fellow fifth grader taunting Mr. Lee.. The child was sent to the principal's office but another student started acting out immediately afterwards. Well, Mr. Lee was not tolerating nonsense in his classroom anymore! He got into a screaming match with the second trouble maker which included quite a lot of cursing. After that, he flipped a desk over and apparently threw a chair at the child! He was discretely and quietly removed from the class and relieved of his teaching duties.

Before I ever went near a university, my view of the culture of physics was very rooted in old books, pre-1960 at least, and often Victorian. I loved that stuff, from the text books to the sci-fi to the speculation of those times. Physics seemed to have a culture associated with it that was very open-minded. The topics physicists liked to talk about seemed to me, judging solely by old books, to be big and fascinating topics.

I didn’t feel there was any kind of dismissiveness in them, or contempt. They seemed to have a love of knowledge and understanding, and to be motivated by that rather than by money, or even by getting things done, necessarily. Money, they didn’t care about. The elderly were valued as much as the young, and no-one knew what they might discover next. Physics was exciting. It was as much experimental and philosophical as it was mathematical. It could eventually all be boiled down to mathematics, it turned out, but mathematics didn’t appear to drive physics.

They are more intelligent than the average person, but not vastly so. They care as much about money as anyone else and study often very detailed things. Like ordinary people, they have a tendency to leap to conclusions and get annoyed if those conclusions are challenged. Their conversation might end up being connected to their work, but more often it’s what we call normal conversation. It often tends to take place in connection with beer, as if they are secretly drowning their sorrows.

Most scientists would be embarrassed to get into too much excited speculation. They would worry that other scientists would see them as flaky. They would worry that they might even be turning flaky, merely by entertaining the wrong ideas, I think. That fear, of being flaky, is always present when scientists, especially perhaps physicists, start to step outside of the sanctioned set of ideas. That’s now left to philosophers, most of whom don’t understand mathematics or physics.

So that’s my mud-tinted view of the culture of science now. Part of me wishes I had been able to just stick to old books and not go meeting actual scientists. Biologists, I think, are a bit more exciting than physicists, because their field has not stagnated in quite the same way that physics seems to have stagnated. Biology does have an exciting edge, even if most of it is positively industrial.

If physicists seem cynical now, perhaps that’s only because of their changed circumstances. In the Victorian era, no-one knew what startling discovery in physics was coming next. After about 1960, that dried up a lot, and physics became more about thrashing out the details of established theories. Not much “blue sky” research seems to be happening in physics, nor in science generally. Scientists are under constant pressure to publish things, I hear.

None of the above should get in the way of studying physics, but for me, it does. It’s like the difference between exercising on Alpine mountain slopes and exercising in a small filthy room with the neighbours arguing next door. If I can ever get back seriously into physics, I’m going to have to get the culture of modern science, as I have experienced it, actually out of my head, and immerse myself in Victorian literature and pre-’60s, or even pre-’50s, science again.

Not a lot of people can do that. Even if you get past that hurdle, you’re not guaranteed a job at a university. Often you will need to work a job at a research centre, which can pay very little depending on the field, attend endless academic conferences and write myriads of studies to get your name up there. Think about the number of people that would be willing to go inside that meat grinder. Therefore, universities compete with each other to get the most talent.

Now, you might think that all universities have different aspects and quirks. Yes, Harvard is special because of its name, Stanford is known for its location near Silicon Valley and M.I.T is amazing for all things tech. But below a certain point, there just isn’t much difference. After all, what’s to separate one local college from the next? Because of this, colleges build fancy buildings, flashy dormitories and get them designed by a famous architect. Students are drawn to them, even though the money, in the end, is coming out of their pockets.
